What we are learning in Literacy this Term
ReadingWe are learning to extract the main idea, first of each paragraph of a text, and then of a whole text. The main ideas of each paragraph are stated either at the beginning or the end of every paragraph, as topic sentences. This helps students to identify significant ideas and/or events, rather than focusing on detail that may side track them. The main ideas of whole texts are clearly stated at the beginning or end of each text, as they are in academic papers.
Students find that the graphic organizers used to represent the main ideas of a text are simple but powerful. Graphic organizers provide strong visual images of what has been read and introduce or reinforce an alternative means of learning. |
